Title & Registration in Leasing: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Every leased vehicle sits at the intersection of three legal relationships — the lessor owns it, the lessee possesses it, and a lienholder may have a financial interest. Most title and registration rules were never designed for that split, creating operational drag, compliance risk, and real financial exposure for leasing companies.

This session moves through all three angles. The Good explores where states and vendors are closing the gap through electronic titling, cross-state digital clearinghouses, and lease-specific e-titling. The Bad covers what remains broken: fragmented state processes, lost paper titles, and tight timelines around lease-end buyouts. The Ugly is where the risk becomes serious — missed UCC filings, subjective odometer disclosure liability, and state-by-state tax rules with no safe default.

You'll leave with a clear picture of where the industry stands today and four specific, low-lift actions you can take to reduce exposure immediately.
